Many kids feel more relaxed without the daily stress of academics, peer pressure, or tightly packed schedules. For some families, this season is a chance to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy a bit more ease. Others may struggle with the lack of structure, leading to boredom, irritability, or emotional outbursts. Summer can be a mixed bag of joy and overwhelm, but either way, it’s a meaningful time to support emotional growth. Therapy can help children: - Build confidence and social-emotional skills - Understand and manage big feelings - Cope with anxiety or life changes Consistent therapy sessions offer calm and connection during the ups and downs of summer. ## Support for Parents & Adults More time together doesn’t always bring more ease. Even with the best intentions, summer can stretch us thin. Power struggles with kids, disrupted routines, and emotional fatigue can quickly pile up. Add in the usual demands of relationships, work, or personal stress, and it’s no wonder so many parents and adults feel overwhelmed this time of year. Therapy offers a space to step back, regroup, and feel supported. Whether you’re navigating parenting challenges, relationship dynamics, or just need a place to sort through what’s going on inside, our team is here to help. Sessions focus on building emotional awareness, setting boundaries with care, and helping you reconnect with yourself so you can move through life with more clarity, confidence, and compassion. You don’t have to carry it all on your own. ## Did you know? Kids aren’t just growing taller, they’re still developing the brain skills for managing emotions, self-control, and decision-making well into their twenties. That’s why they need support, practice, and patience as they learn. Summer can be a great time to nurture these skills gently, one step at a time. ![](https://drsala.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/image-1.png) ## Psychological Assessments: Clarity for Every Age If you or your child have been struggling at school, at home, or in daily life, and you’re not quite sure why, a psychological or psychoeducational assessment can offer insight and a clear path forward. Summer is an ideal time for assessment. With fewer demands and a more relaxed pace, children, teens, and young adults are often more engaged and regulated, making the process feel less stressful. Assessments help identify things like attention challenges, learning differences, autism, or emotional and behavioural concerns. For students heading into post-secondary education, they can also support accommodation planning and personalized learning strategies. Our approach is compassionate, clear, and tailored to each individual. If you’re considering an assessment, we’re currently booking into August and would be happy to answer your questions. ## Raising Resilience Boundaries Without Battles A relaxed, supportive space for parents and caregivers to connect, share real-life experiences, and gain practical tools for navigating the everyday challenges of raising kids. **July 28th, 2025 | 6:00-7:30pm | $35\* \*covered by most insurance providers** ## Emotion Commotion 8 Week DBT Group (Ages 8-11) A playful, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)-informed group where kids explore big emotions and build coping skills through games, art, and movement, perfect for anxious, or often overwhelmed children. **Fall Registration Now Open! \*covered by most insurance providers** ## Let’s Connect This Summer Whether you’re reaching out for your child, your teen, your family, or for yourself, summer is a wonderful time to slow down, check in, and invest in emotional wellbeing. Dr. Sala & Associates offers Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)-related assessment services in Hamilton and Waterdown in collaboration with Dr. Kim Harris from Navigating Onward, in London. This service is designed to support a comprehensive assessment to determine if an individual meets the criteria for a diagnosis of this disorder which will also allow access to specific services in the community as well as a better understanding of an individual’s strengths, challenges, and next steps. For many families, the goal is not simply to find a label. It is to better understand what may be happening, why certain difficulties may keep showing up, and what kinds of supports may help at home, school, in healthcare settings, and in the community. It is also helpful to make informed decisions about future care. This service is currently available by physician referral only ## Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, often shortened to FASD, is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. It can affect how the brain and body develop and function. FASD can impact many areas of daily life, including attention, learning, memory, executive functioning, emotional regulation, motor skills, language, mental health, adaptive daily living skills, and school or work functioning. FASD is often misunderstood or missed entirely. Some individuals may be described as having behavioural, emotional, motivational, or compliance-related difficulties when their needs may be better understood through a brain-based, neurodevelopmental lens. A clearer understanding can help shift the focus from: ***“Why is this happening?”*** to ***“What supports, accommodations, and next steps may be helpful?”*** At Dr. Sala & Associates, our approach is compassionate, strengths-based, and focused on helping families and care teams better understand the whole person. ## A Strengths-Based, FASD-Informed Approach Families often arrive at assessment after a long period of uncertainty. There may have been years of questions about learning, attention, memory, emotional regulation, school performance, social difficulties, or behaviour that do not seem fully explained by previous assessments or diagnoses. Our role is to help bring clarity to the bigger picture. An FASD-informed assessment does not look at behaviour in isolation. It considers how the person thinks, learns, remembers, regulates emotions, responds to expectations, manages daily demands, and navigates relationships and environments. Dr. Sala & Associates is offering this service as a pilot project, in collaboration with Dr. Kim Harris from Navigating Onward, to help strengthen access to FASD-informed care in Hamilton, Waterdown, and surrounding communities. ## When an FASD-Related Assessment May Be Considered An FASD-related assessment may be considered when there is evidence of prenatal alcohol exposure and subsequent difficulties in learning, memory, attention, regulation, development, adaptive functioning, or day-to-day life. as the following is a sample of difficulties that those with FASD may experience: - Difficulty with attention, focus, or impulse control - Challenges with memory or learning from experience - Trouble with planning, organization, problem-solving, or flexible thinking - Emotional regulation difficulties or frequent overwhelm - Academic challenges that are not fully explained by previous supports - Fine-motor, language, or developmental concerns - Difficulty managing daily routines or age-expected responsibilities - Behaviour that seems inconsistent with the person’s intentions or abilities - Mental health concerns alongside developmental or learning differences - A history of confirmed or suspected prenatal alcohol exposure - A need for clearer recommendations for home, school, healthcare, or community planning Assessment can help families and care teams understand whether supports and expectations need to be adjusted to better match the individual’s developmental and functional profile. ## Moving From Questions to Next Steps A clearer understanding of FASD-related strengths and challenges can help families, schools, physicians, and support teams respond with more appropriate expectations and supports. Assessment may help by: - Clarifying strengths and areas of need - Supporting a better understanding of learning, memory, attention, regulation, and daily functioning - Helping families and care teams respond with more appropriate expectations - Informing recommendations for school accommodations or support planning - Identifying whether other concerns may also need attention - Supporting referrals to additional services, when appropriate - Reducing misunderstanding, blame, or frustration - Helping the individual and family move toward practical next steps The purpose of assessment is not simply to identify difficulties. It is to support a more accurate, compassionate, and useful understanding of the person. ### Who You’ll Work With Our clients are seen by experienced, registered clinicians who are matched to your specific needs and goals. ![Headshot of Dr. Michelle Sala, Founder and Clinical Psychologist at Dr. Sala u0026 Associates in Waterdown.](https://drsala.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Dr.-Michelle-Sala-2025-08-19.jpg "Dr. Michelle Sala - Clinical Psychologist | Dr. Sala u0026 Associates") #### Dr. Michelle Sala| #### PhD • CPsych The founder and clinical director of Dr. Sala & Associates. Want to learn more about our full team before booking? [Meet the Team](https://drsala.ca/meet-the-team/) ## Areas That May Be Explored FASD-related assessment is a comprehensive process. Depending on the referral question and clinical needs, the assessment may include several areas of functioning. The assessment may include evaluation of: - General cognitive functioning - Attention and memory - Executive functioning - Fine-motor skills - Language functioning - Academic achievement - Rating scales completed by caregivers, teachers, or other relevant individuals - Screening of mental health and related areas - Review of developmental, medical, educational, and support history - Assessment of facial features associated with FASD, when clinically appropriate The goal is to understand the individual’s pattern of strengths and needs across multiple areas, rather than focusing on one symptom, diagnosis, or behaviour in isolation. ## What to Expect FASD-related assessment often requires a collaborative understanding of the individual’s background, development, current functioning, and support needs. The exact process may vary depending on the referral question and the information available. In general, the process may include: ### Physician Referral The process begins with a physician referral. This helps ensure that the referral question is appropriate and that relevant other medical, developmental, or clinical considerations are ruled out. ### Intake and Background Information Our team gathers information about the individual’s current concerns, developmental history, strengths, challenges, and support needs. This may include information from parents, caregivers, guardians, physicians, schools, or other professionals when appropriate. ### Review of Records Relevant records may be reviewed to better understand the individual’s history and current functioning. These may include school records, previous assessments, report cards, Individual Education Plans, medical information, therapy reports, or other available documentation. ### Assessment Sessions Assessment sessions may examine areas such as cognitive functioning, academic skills, attention, memory, executive functioning, language, fine-motor skills, adaptive functioning, and emotional or behavioural functioning. ### Rating Scales and Collateral Information Rating scales and information from caregivers, teachers, or other involved professionals may help provide a fuller picture of how the individual functions across different settings. ### Integration of Findings Assessment information is carefully reviewed and interpreted to understand the individual’s profile of strengths, challenges, and possible support needs. ### Feedback and Recommendations When appropriate, families and referring professionals will receive clear feedback and practical recommendations to support planning across home, school, healthcare, and community settings. ## Questions Do I need a physician referral? Yes. FASD assessment services at Dr. Sala & Associates are currently available by physician referral only. If you do not yet have a referral, please speak with your or the individual’s physician about your concerns and ask whether an FASD assessment referral may be appropriate. Is FASD the same as fetal alcohol syndrome? Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, or FAS, is an older and more specific term that many people still recognize. The broader current term is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). FASD reflects a wider range of possible neurodevelopmental effects associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. Some individuals may have facial features associated with FASD, while others may not. This is one reason assessment needs to consider more than appearance alone. What concerns might lead to an FASD assessment referral? In general, a referral may be considered when there is evidence of prenatal alcohol exposure along with difficulties in multiple areas including learning, memory, attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, adaptive daily living, motor skills, language, academic achievement, or mental health. Some individuals may also have previous diagnoses or suspected concerns related to ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, anxiety, mood concerns, trauma-related difficulties, or behavioural challenges. Assessment can help clarify the broader picture. Is FASD assessment the same as an ADHD, autism, or psychoeducational assessment? No. While there are overlaps in the tests used, FASD-related assessment has a different purpose and requires careful consideration of prenatal alcohol exposure, neurodevelopmental functioning, medical and developmental history, and other possible explanations. An ADHD, autism, or psychoeducational assessment may answer important questions, but it may not fully address FASD. What does the assessment look at? The assessment may examine areas such as general cognitive functioning, attention, memory, executive functioning, fine-motor skills, language, academic achievement, mental health, adaptive functioning, and facial features associated with FASD when clinically appropriate. Information from caregivers, schools, physicians, previous records, and other involved professionals may also be important. Will the assessment guarantee a diagnosis? No assessment can guarantee a specific diagnosis. The purpose of the process is to carefully examine the referral question, understand the individual’s strengths and challenges, consider possible explanations, and provide recommendations for next steps. Depending on the findings and the nature of the referral, the outcome may include diagnostic clarification, support recommendations, further referral suggestions, or guidance for home, school, healthcare, and community planning. Can adults be assessed? Yes. If an adult FASD-related assessment is being considered, please speak with the referring physician or contact our office to ask about the referral process. What records are helpful? Helpful records may include medical information, developmental history, school records, previous psychological or psychoeducational assessments, speech-language or occupational therapy reports, report cards, Individual Education Plans, behaviour plans, support plans, and any available documentation related to prenatal alcohol exposure. Our office can provide more guidance about what information may be needed once a physician referral has been made. ## You’ve Already Done the Hardest Part Deciding you want things to be different takes more courage than most people give themselves credit for. Play-based therapy is guided by experienced clinicians who use play intentionally to support emotional growth, problem-solving, self-expression, and healthy relationships. [Book Now](https://drsala.ca/contact-us#get-in-touch)[Learn More](#understanding-giftedness) ## On this page - [Understanding giftedness](#understanding-giftedness) - [When to consider testing](#when-to-consider) - [What the assessment clarifies](#what-assessment-clarifies) - [School planning in Ontario](#school-planning) - [Assessment process](#assessment-process) - [FAQs](#frequently-asked-questions) ## Understanding giftedness Giftedness is often talked about as high intellectual ability, but families usually come to assessment with a more practical question: what does this child need to learn well, stay engaged, and feel understood? In Ontario schools, giftedness is considered an intellectual exceptionality and may involve learning needs that require differentiated experiences beyond the regular classroom program. A private assessment can help clarify the child’s cognitive and learning profile, while the school or school board determines formal identification, placement, and programming decisions. ### Quick details Focus**Intellectual profile** Purpose**Clarity and planning** May support**IEP or enrichment discussion** Output**Written report and feedback** ## When to consider a gifted assessment Families often seek gifted testing when a child seems capable of more than the current program is offering, when school performance does not match apparent ability, or when giftedness may be present alongside another learning, attention, autism-related, or emotional concern. Advanced learning ### Fast, complex, or unusual thinking Your child may learn quickly, ask unusually complex questions, make unexpected connections, or show advanced reasoning in one or more areas. School fit ### Capable but under-challenged Some gifted learners need more depth, pace, complexity, or choice than the classroom program is currently providing. Uneven profile ### Strong ability and real struggles A child can be gifted and still struggle with attention, output, anxiety, perfectionism, social fit, learning skills, or emotional regulation. ## What a gifted assessment can clarify A gifted assessment is not just about whether a child meets a specific score threshold. It helps explain how the child thinks, where strengths are strongest, and what supports or enrichment may help them thrive. 1 ### Cognitive strengths Standardized testing helps describe reasoning, verbal comprehension, visual-spatial thinking, working memory, processing speed, and overall patterns of ability. 2 ### Learning profile Academic and developmental context can help clarify whether school performance is matching the child’s apparent ability. 3 ### Possible barriers When appropriate, the assessment can consider attention, anxiety, learning differences, autism-related concerns, or emotional factors that may be affecting performance. 4 ### Practical recommendations Families receive a written report with recommendations for home, school, enrichment, accommodations, or further assessment when needed. ## More than high marks Gifted children do not always look the same. Some are high-achieving and visibly advanced, while others mask, avoid work, become bored, feel anxious about mistakes, or perform inconsistently when tasks are not a good fit. Assessment helps move the conversation away from labels alone and toward a more useful question: what learning environment, level of challenge, and support does this child need? ### Whole-child view At Dr. Sala & Associates, our assessment pages emphasize strengths, challenges, practical recommendations, and care that is clear, supportive, and tailored to the person’s needs. ## Giftedness, school planning & IEPs in Ontario Ontario’s special education framework includes giftedness within the intellectual category of exceptionalities. Identification and placement decisions are typically made through the school board’s process, including the Identification, Placement and Review Committee where applicable. A private gifted assessment may support conversations with schools about enrichment, differentiated instruction, IEP planning, accommodations, or next steps. It does not guarantee a specific identification, gifted placement, or program decision. ### Helpful school-planning note School-board criteria and gifted-identification procedures can vary. Families should confirm current requirements with their child’s school or board before assuming a specific score, report type, or placement pathway. ## Giftedness and twice-exceptional questions A child may have strong intellectual abilities and still need support. When giftedness overlaps with another area of need, assessment can help families and schools avoid missing either side of the profile. Attention ### ADHD or executive functioning High ability can sometimes mask attention or organization challenges, while ADHD-related struggles can sometimes hide a child’s strengths. Learning ### Academic output or learning skills Some students reason at a high level but struggle with written output, reading fluency, math facts, processing speed, or task completion. Well-being ### Anxiety, perfectionism, or emotional intensity Some gifted learners experience frustration, worry, high standards, boredom, social mismatch, or emotional intensity that affects daily life. ## Our gifted assessment process We aim to make the assessment process clear, supportive, and practical. The exact plan depends on the referral question, school needs, child’s age, and available background information. Step 1 ### Intake & history We begin with background information about development, school history, strengths, concerns, previous testing, and the reason for assessment. Step 2 ### Testing sessions Your child completes standardized cognitive testing. Academic, attention, or social-emotional measures may be added depending on the referral question. Step 3 ### Analysis & report Results are reviewed in context and summarized in a written report that explains what the findings mean in real life. Step 4 ### Feedback & next steps We meet with you to review the results, answer questions, and discuss recommendations for home, school, enrichment, or further support. ## Why choose Dr. Sala & Associates? A gifted assessment should provide clarity without reducing a child to a number. Our goal is to help families understand strengths, needs, and practical next steps. ### Clear and supportive process We explain the steps, make space for questions, and aim to help families feel informed from the first conversation through feedback. ### Practical reports Reports are written to support real planning conversations with parents, schools, and other professionals. ### Whole-child interpretation We consider cognitive strengths alongside learning, attention, emotional, social, and family context when relevant. ## Helpful resources These resources may help families understand giftedness, Ontario school planning, and child and youth mental health. ### Giftedness in children and youth Canadian Psychological Association fact sheet on giftedness, assessment, and school programming differences across Canada. Is giftedness a mental-health diagnosis? No. Giftedness is generally understood as an educational exceptionality rather than a mental-health diagnosis. The assessment can still be useful for understanding learning needs, strengths, and school-planning questions. Does a gifted assessment guarantee gifted placement at school? No. Schools and school boards make decisions about formal gifted identification, IPRC placement, programming, and eligibility. A private assessment can support the conversation but does not guarantee a specific outcome. Can a child be gifted and still struggle at school?Yes. Some children have high reasoning abilities while also experiencing attention, learning, emotional, social, or output-related challenges. This is sometimes described as a twice-exceptional profile. What should I bring to the intake?Helpful documents may include report cards, teacher comments, IEPs, previous assessments, school-board requests, relevant medical or developmental information, and examples of schoolwork if available. Do I need a referral? For most services, families can contact Dr. Sala & Associates directly to ask about fit and next steps. --- ### [Meet The Team](https://drsala.ca/meet-the-team/) **Published:** June 3, 2025 **Author:** Admin **Content:** ![](https://drsala.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Office.jpg)# Meet Our Team of Psychologists & Therapists Welcome to Dr. Sala & Associates. [Book Now](https://drsala.ca/contact-us#get-in-touch) [Learn More](#what-is-dso-assessment) ## On this page - [What is a DSO assessment?](#what-is-dso-assessment) - [Who this can help](#who-this-helps) - [What to expect](#what-to-expect) - [DSO eligibility notes](#dso-eligibility) - [FAQs](#frequently-asked-questions) ## What is a DSO eligibility assessment? Developmental Services Ontario is the access point for adult developmental services funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services in Ontario. To apply for adult developmental services, individuals generally need documentation showing that they live in Ontario, are 18 or older, and have evidence of a developmental disability. A written psychological assessment is commonly required to document the developmental disability portion of the application. At Dr. Sala & Associates, we provide psychological assessments that are designed to support this documentation process with care, dignity, and clear next steps. ### Quick details Focus**DSO documentation** Age group**16+ planning, 18+ services** Core areas**Cognitive & adaptive functioning** Output**Written report & feedback** ## Who can this assessment help? This assessment may be helpful when an individual or family needs psychological documentation for Developmental Services Ontario or adult developmental-service planning. Transition planning ### Youth preparing for adult services Individuals over age 16 may begin preparing documentation before adult developmental services become available at age 18. Adult applications ### Adults seeking access to DSO-funded supports Adults who do not have a prior psychological assessment may need updated documentation to support a DSO application. Updated records ### Families or service coordinators Families and support teams may need current information about cognitive functioning, adaptive functioning, and daily support needs. ## What the assessment includes The exact assessment plan is tailored to the individual’s history, age, communication style, documentation needs, and referral question. The goal is to create a clear report that supports the DSO application process and practical next steps. 1 ### Cognitive functioning Standardized testing helps clarify reasoning, problem-solving, and overall intellectual functioning. 2 ### Adaptive functioning Adaptive measures help describe daily living skills, communication, independence, and practical support needs. 3 ### Developmental history Background information helps document when concerns began and how needs have appeared across development. 4 ### Diagnostic summary The report summarizes findings, diagnostic impressions where applicable, recommendations, and next steps. ## What to expect We aim to make the process clear, respectful, and manageable. We also take time to answer questions so families and individuals understand what the assessment is measuring and how results can be used. Step 1 ### Intake & document review We begin with background information, referral questions, previous reports, school or service records, and DSO-related documentation needs. Step 2 ### Interview & rating scales The process may include caregiver and/or self-report interviews, adaptive functioning forms, and other questionnaires when appropriate. Step 3 ### Testing sessions Standardized cognitive and adaptive testing is completed in a way that is supportive and appropriate for the individual’s needs. Step 4 ### Report & feedback You receive a written report and a feedback session to review findings, explain results, and discuss next steps. ## Important DSO eligibility notes Developmental Services Ontario decides eligibility for ministry-funded adult developmental services. A psychological assessment can provide important documentation, but it does not guarantee eligibility, funding, placement, or access to a specific service. DSO states that the psychological assessment used to prove a developmental disability must be completed by a psychologist or psychological associate and include information about cognitive functioning, adaptive functioning, and developmental history. Families should confirm current requirements directly with their area DSO before beginning or updating documentation. ### Helpful external resource For current application details, visit Developmental Services Ontario’s official information page. [Visit DSO](https://www.dsontario.ca/how-to-access-services) ## Why choose Dr. Sala & Associates? The DSO application process can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to provide a clear assessment experience that respects the individual’s dignity, history, strengths, and support needs. ### Respectful process We take a person-centred approach and aim to make each step clear, supportive, and manageable. ### Clear reporting Reports explain cognitive and adaptive testing results in practical language for documentation and planning. ### Feedback and next steps We review findings with you, answer questions, and discuss possible next steps for the DSO process. ## Book a DSO eligibility assessment consultation Reach out to ask about fit, timelines, documentation, and what to expect from the assessment process. Sometimes, they struggle to find the words to express what they’re feeling or don’t yet have the tools to manage big emotions. Therapy can offer them a safe, affirming space to be themselves, explore their inner world, and build lasting skills that support emotional health and social connection. ### Contents - [Is Therapy the Right Step?](#is-therapy-the-right-step) - [Our Approach](#our-approach) - [The Process](#the-process) - [Play-Based Therapy](#play-based-therapy) - [Get in Touch](#get-in-touch) [Home](https://drsala.ca "Home")» [Services](https://drsala.ca/services/ "Services")» [Therapy in Hamilton & Waterdown](https://drsala.ca/services/therapy/ "Therapy in Hamilton & Waterdown")» Child & Teen Therapy ## Is Therapy the Right Step? It can be difficult to know when to seek help. While every child’s journey is different, therapy can be a valuable resource if you notice your child or teen is: - Struggling with overwhelming emotions like sadness, anger, or worry. - Having difficulty with friendships or navigating social situations. - Experiencing significant changes in their mood, sleep, or appetite. - Facing challenges at school, academically or socially. - Dealing with a major life event, such as a family change or a loss. Children do not always express distress with words. Sometimes it may show up through changes in sleep, increased irritability, withdrawal, difficulty separating from caregivers, frequent meltdowns, school avoidance, or challenges managing emotions. Therapy offers children a safe and supportive space to process experiences, build coping skills, and strengthen emotional resilience in a way that feels natural and comfortable for them. ## Our Approach: Supporting Your Child’s Unique World At Dr. Sala and Associates, our goal is to support your child’s growth, confidence, and resilience. Our therapists work alongside young people in age-appropriate and engaging ways, always attuned to their specific needs and preferences. A session is a collaborative process and might involve: - **Play and Art:** Using creative tools to express feelings that are hard to put into words. - **Storytelling:** Exploring challenges and strengths through narrative. - **Movement:** Incorporating somatic awareness to help regulate emotions. - **Quiet Conversation:** Building a trusting relationship where a teen feels safe to talk openly. ## The Therapy Process Understanding what happens in therapy can make the first step feel easier. - **For Younger Children:** Sessions often look like purposeful play. Through games, drawing, or sand trays, children can process experiences and learn new skills in a way that feels natural and safe. For younger children, this may include play-based therapy approaches that help them express feelings, process experiences, and build coping skills in a developmentally appropriate way. - **For Teens:** Therapy with adolescents is grounded in trust and respect. While it can involve direct conversation, it also integrates their interests, whether it’s music, writing, or mindfulness, to create a space that feels like their own. - **For Parents:** We work collaboratively with caregivers. This means you will receive support, insight, and guidance while we ensure your child’s privacy and sense of autonomy remain at the center of our work. ## Play-Based Therapy For many children, emotions, worries, and experiences can be difficult to express through words alone. Play-based therapy creates a safe and developmentally appropriate space where children can communicate, process emotions, build coping skills, and strengthen emotional resilience through play, creativity, and connection. This approach can be especially helpful for children experiencing: - Anxiety or stress - Emotional regulation challenges - Behavioural concerns - Life transitions or family changes - Grief or loss - Social difficulties - Trauma or overwhelming experiences Play-based therapy is guided by experienced clinicians who use play intentionally to support emotional growth, problem-solving, self-expression, and healthy relationships. Sessions are tailored to each child’s unique needs and may also include caregiver support and collaboration along the way. If you’ve been wondering whether this type of intervention could benefit your child or family, we’d be happy to answer questions or discuss whether it may be a good fit. ## Get in Touch Whatever you’re carrying, you don’t have to carry it alone. The first step is often the most important. We invite you to schedule a free, confidential 15-minute consultation. They’re capable, functioning adults, managing work, relationships, and responsibilities, but somewhere along the way, managing started to feel like all there is. If you’re in Hamilton, Burlington, Waterdown, or anywhere in the surrounding area, and you’ve been quietly wondering whether therapy could help, the honest answer is: it probably can. We offer individual therapy for adults at our Waterdown clinic and virtually across Ontario. You don’t need to hit rock bottom to deserve support. ## You Might Be in the Right Place If… You don’t need to arrive with a diagnosis or a clear explanation of what’s wrong. Many of the adults we work with come in saying some version of one of these: #### Feeling Unlike Yourself You’ve been going through the motions but can’t remember the last time you genuinely felt like yourself. #### Constant Background Anxiety Anxiety has become the low hum in the background, even when nothing is technically wrong. #### Burnout That Rest Doesn’t Fix You’re not just tired. You’re burnt out, and rest does not seem to bring you back. #### A Major Life Change A relationship ending, job loss, move, health scare, or transition has left you feeling unsettled. #### Grief That Feels Stuck Grief has settled in and feels complicated, heavy, or harder to move through than expected. #### People-Pleasing Exhaustion You’ve spent so long making room for others that you feel like there is barely space for yourself. #### Relentless Pressure High standards, high expectations, and constant pressure are becoming harder to carry. #### Not Sure What Is Wrong You may not have the words for it yet. You just know something feels off. None of these require a crisis. All of them are reason enough to reach out. ## How We Work With Adults There’s no single method that works for every person. At Dr. Sala & Associates, we draw on several evidence-based approaches and shape the work around your goals, your pace, and the way you’re wired. Here’s a plain-language overview of the approaches we use most often with adults: ### Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) A practical, structured approach that helps you notice the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, then learn to shift the patterns that are keeping you stuck. ### Mindfulness-Based Therapy Grounded in evidence, this approach teaches you to relate differently to your inner experience, with more curiosity and less reactivity, so you’re not constantly at the mercy of your own mind. ### Hypnotherapy A calm, focused state used to access the part of your mind that drives habits, automatic responses, and deeply held beliefs. Particularly effective for anxiety, habit change, and building focus. Offered by Dr. Sala, who is a certified hypnotherapist. ### Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Rather than fighting difficult thoughts and feelings, ACT helps you make room for them while staying focused on what matters most to you and the life you actually want to be living. ### Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) EFT works with the emotional patterns underneath your behaviour, helping you understand and express what’s really going on so you can build stronger, more secure relationships, starting with yourself. Every client who comes through our door is different. Your therapist will work with you to understand what you need and adapt the approach accordingly. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. It’s a collaboration. ### Who You’ll Work With Our adult therapy clients are seen by experienced, registered clinicians who are matched to your specific needs and goals. ![Headshot of Dr. Michelle Sala, Founder and Clinical Psychologist at Dr. Sala & Associates in Waterdown.](https://drsala.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Dr.-Michelle-Sala-2025-08-19.jpg "Dr. Michelle Sala - Clinical Psychologist | Dr. Sala & Associates") #### Dr. Michelle Sala| #### PhD • CPsych The founder and clinical director of Dr. Sala & Associates. Here’s exactly what the process looks like at Dr. Sala & Associates. ### Free 15-Minute Consultation You reach out through our contact form or by phone. We’ll schedule a brief call so you can share what’s bringing you in and ask any questions. There’s no commitment and no pressure, just a conversation to make sure we’re the right fit for you. ### Intake Session Your first full appointment gives your therapist a chance to understand your history, your goals, and what you’d like to be different. This session is about listening, not diagnosing. You set the pace. ### Ongoing Sessions Regular sessions, typically every one to two weeks, form the core of the work. Your therapist will tailor the approach to what’s most useful for you, and you’ll always have a sense of where you’re headed and why. ### Goals Review Periodically, you and your therapist will check in on your progress, revisit your goals, and decide together how to move forward. Therapy isn’t indefinite. It’s purposeful, and it moves at your pace. ### Session format Sessions are offered both in-person at our Waterdown clinic and virtually via secure video for adults anywhere in Ontario. ## Questions Adults Often Ask Before Starting **Do I need a referral to see a psychologist or therapist?** No. In Ontario, you do not need a referral from a doctor or another health professional to access psychological services. You can contact us directly, and we will guide you through the next steps. Some insurance plans may require a physician’s referral for reimbursement purposes. Before your first appointment, it is a good idea to check your policy or call your insurer to confirm what they require. **How long will I need to come to therapy?** There is no single answer. The length of therapy depends on what you are working through, what your goals are, and what kind of support feels useful to you. Some people find that eight to twelve sessions gives them the tools and perspective they need. Others prefer to work over a longer period, especially when concerns are more complex or longstanding. Your therapist will check in with you regularly about your progress. We never recommend more sessions than we believe are genuinely useful, and you always have the final say on how long you continue. **Is therapy covered by insurance?** Many extended health benefit plans in Canada cover psychological services, either in full or in part. Coverage varies depending on your employer, provider, and specific plan. If you have Sun Life benefits, you may be able to use our direct billing arrangement. For other insurers, we provide a receipt after each session that you can submit for reimbursement. If you are unsure what your plan covers, a quick call to your insurer before your first appointment can give you a clearer picture. **What’s the difference between a psychologist and a therapist?** In Ontario, a psychologist holds a doctoral degree, such as a PhD or PsyD, and is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. A therapist or psychotherapist typically holds a master’s degree and is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, also known as the CRPO. Both psychologists and registered therapists are trained to provide therapy and are held to professional standards. At Dr. Sala & Associates, your intake conversation helps us match you with the clinician who best fits your needs. ## You’ve Already Done the Hardest Part Deciding you want things to be different takes more courage than most people give themselves credit for. For younger clients, we may also speak with parents, teachers, and/or caregivers to gather a comprehensive view. **Analysis & Assessment** After the sessions, we carefully review the collected information to identify patterns, strengths, and challenges. This forms the basis of a detailed, personalized report. ***Reports are usually completed within 4 weeks following the final feedback session***. **Feedback & Recommendations** We schedule a follow-up meeting, either ***in person or virtually*** to explain the results in clear, accessible language, answer any questions, and discuss targeted recommendations to support your goals. **Fees and Insurance** We provide transparent pricing up-front and can assist with insurance claims by supplying necessary documentation to make the process easier for you. ## Not Sure What’s Right For You? It can impact learning, emotional regulation, relationships, and day-to-day functioning at school, work, and home. At Dr. Sala & Associates, we understand that ADHD is not just about attention—it is about understanding how a person thinks, learns, and navigates their world. Our goal is to provide clarity, identify strengths, and help you move forward with confidence. ## What Is an ADHD Assessment? An ADHD assessment is a comprehensive psychological evaluation designed to determine whether ADHD is present and to better understand how attention, executive functioning, and emotional factors are affecting daily life Rather than relying on a single test, our assessments look at the whole person, including cognitive, academic, behavioural, and emotional functioning. This process helps to: - Clarify whether ADHD is present - Identify strengths and areas of difficulty - Differentiate ADHD from other concerns (e.g., anxiety, learning disabilities) - Guide meaningful recommendations for school, work, and home ## Who This Is For An ADHD assessment may be helpful for: ### **Children & Teens** - Difficulty focusing, staying organized, or completing tasks - Hyperactivity, impulsivity, or emotional outbursts - Academic struggles despite effort - Concerns raised by teachers or school teams ### **Adults** - Ongoing challenges with time management, organization, or follow-through - Difficulty maintaining attention at work - Feeling overwhelmed by daily responsibilities - Late-identified or previously undiagnosed ADHD ### ****Families**** - Seeking clarity about behaviour and learning challenges - Wanting guidance on how to best support their child or teen - Looking to access school accommodations or external supports ## What’s Included in the Assessment? Each assessment is individualized but typically includes: - A detailed clinical interview to understand history and current concerns - Standardized assessment of attention, executive functioning, and learning - Behavioural and emotional questionnaires (parents, teachers, or self-report, as appropriate) - Review of school or work information (when available) - Integration of findings across settings ## How an ADHD Assessment Helps An ADHD assessment provides more than a diagnosis, it offers a roadmap. It can help you: - Understand how attention and executive functioning impact daily life - Access school supports (e.g., IEPs, accommodations) - Guide treatment, including therapy or medication discussions - Build strategies for organization, focus, and emotional regulation - Improve confidence and reduce frustration - ## Get in Touch Taking the first step can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. It explores areas such as emotional well-being, self-regulation, social skills, behavior patterns, mood, and anxiety. ![](https://drsala.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Therapy-1024x683.jpg) While the psychoeducational assessment looks at *how* a person learns, the socio-emotional component adds depth by looking at *how they feel* and *function emotionally*. This is especially important when challenges with focus, motivation, or academic performance may be tied to stress, worry, self-esteem, or underlying mental health concerns. This assessment is not about labeling, it’s about gaining a fuller picture. Emotional and social challenges can significantly impact learning, relationships, and day-to-day life. By exploring this part of the picture, we can offer more holistic support and tailored recommendations that meet you where you truly are. ## Who Can Benefit? Emotional functioning assessments can be helpful for anyone who is struggling to understand their inner world or who finds that their emotions are getting in the way of daily life. Whether it’s a child who is often overwhelmed, anxious, or frustrated, a teen facing academic pressure, social challenges, or low mood, or an adult who has always felt “too sensitive” or stuck in certain patterns, this kind of assessment can provide powerful clarity. Sometimes behaviours like procrastination, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, or low motivation are really signs of deeper emotional struggles. When parents, teachers, or individuals themselves sense that something isn’t quite right, but can’t pinpoint what, an emotional assessment can help connect the dots. ## Why Emotional Insight Matters We often focus on the things we can see, like slipping grades, changes in behaviour, or social difficulties, but emotional challenges can often identify the hidden drivers behind them. Anxiety, difficulty managing frustration, low self-esteem, and other emotional experiences can quietly impact learning, relationships, and motivation. An emotional assessment helps uncover these patterns and gives people the language to talk about what they’ve been feeling but may not have known how to express. That kind of insight can be deeply validating, and it’s often the first step toward change. It also guides us in recommending the right supports, like specific targets or goals for therapy, school or workplace accommodations, or emotional regulation strategies, so individuals and families can move forward with greater confidence and care. ## Get in Touch Taking the first step can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. It may be especially helpful if you want to: - Work through emotional issues that feel “stuck” or unresolved - Manage stress or health conditions influenced by the mind–body connection - Release emotional blockages and build healthier coping strategies - Break free from unhelpful thought or behavior patterns - Strengthen positive habits and resilience - Boost motivation, confidence, and self-belief ## What to Expect During hypnosis, you enter a natural state of focused awareness where your mind is more open to positive suggestion. This makes it easier to access underlying patterns and responses that may be difficult to shift through willpower alone. ## Tailored to You Everyone experiences hypnosis a little differently. Some people go into a deep trance, while others remain lighter and more alert. Both can be effective—what matters most is finding the approach that works for you. ## Not Sure What’s Right For You? It is an in-depth evaluation for children and teens who already have an ASD diagnosis and are supported by the Ontario Autism Program (OAP), *and* may be eligible for further funding to address co-occuring concerns. You may still have big questions. Why is school a struggle? Are big emotions getting in the way? Could something else like ADHD, anxiety, or a learning disability be part of the picture? The cost of this type of psychological assessment is considered an eligible expense under OAP Core Clinical Services. We provide the necessary receipts for you to submit for reimbursement. ### My child already has an ASD diagnosis. Why do we need another assessment? This assessment looks at different questions. Instead of asking “Is it autism?”, we ask “What else is happening?”. It helps clarify co-occurring conditions like ADHD or learning disabilities that require their own specific support strategies. ### Are your services covered by private insurance? Most extended health benefit plans provide coverage for services offered by a registered psychologist. You can often use private insurance to supplement your OAP funding. We recommend you check with your provider about your specific coverage. ## Helpful External Resources Keep learning and growing. A correct diagnosis brings relief. It gives a clear and true reason for the challenges you or your child might have. ### Post-Secondary & the Workplace For adults and college students, a diagnosis is the official proof needed to get important accommodations. This can include extra time on exams, use of assistive technology, extended deadlines, or special support at work. Our reports give the proof you need to get the help that will help you succeed. ### Practical Support in Local Schools Our psycho-educational assessments help you understand your child’s needs. School boards decide final placements, but our reports are accepted by public, Catholic, French-language, and private schools in Hamilton, Burlington, and nearby areas. ## Why Choose Dr. Sala & Associates for Your Assessment? ### We listen to your whole story, not just symptoms From the very beginning, we focus on building trust and understanding your unique experiences. Our approach is flexible, respectful, and grounded in empathy. ### Clear, practical reports you can use You will receive a written report that does not just list scores, it explains what they mean in real life. Our reports include meaningful recommendations you can use at school, work, or home. ### A whole-person approach You are more than your challenges. We consider emotional well-being, lived experiences, and social context alongside learning patterns. When appropriate, we can explore how mental health, stress, or self-esteem may be connected to learning or attention difficulties. ### A process designed to support you Assessments can feel overwhelming, but we walk with you through every step. School board assessments are valuable but often have very long waitlists and may be limited in scope. A private assessment is typically much faster, more comprehensive, and provides a detailed report with specific diagnoses and recommendations that you can own and share as needed. ### I’m an adult, is an assessment still worth it? Absolutely! Many adults find that an assessment provides profound relief and self-understanding after years of unexplained challenges. It can be the key to unlocking workplace accommodations, improving personal relationships, and developing effective strategies for lifelong learning and success. ### What happens during the assessment process, and how long does it take? **1. Feedback meeting** (60 min) At the end of the process, clients will have a diagnosis ***\*if applicable\**** and a detailed report with many recommendations to assist with the challenges identified. ### How much does a psycho-educational assessment cost? Why is my child struggling at school? Are their emotions overwhelming them? Could something else like anxiety, ADHD, or a learning challenge—be affecting how they think, feel, or behave? ![](https://drsala.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Adults-1024x683.jpg) **At Dr. Sala & Associates, we recognize that autism is just one part of the picture. That’s why we offer comprehensive psychological assessments designed to look beyond the diagnosis. These assessments explore learning styles, emotional well-being, cognitive functioning, and co-occurring concerns, helping you understand how to support your child across school, home, and community life.** ## What Is This Assessment? This is **not an autism diagnostic assessment**. It is an in-depth, individualized evaluation focused on emotional, cognitive, academic, and behavioral functioning for children and teens **with an existing ASD diagnosis**. Our goal is to identify strengths, clarify challenges, and uncover any co-occurring conditions, such as **ADHD**, **anxiety**, **learning disabilities**, or **emotional regulation difficulties**, that may be contributing to day-to-day struggles. These assessments can help you: Better understand your child’s learning profile and how they process information - Explore challenges related to mood, anxiety, attention, and executive functioning - Clarify how autism may interact with other neurodevelopmental or mental health concerns - Receive specific recommendations for therapies, school accommodations, or skill-building supports - Strengthen service planning through the OAP or within school and community systems ## Who This Is For This type of assessment is ideal for: - Children or teens who already have a formal **ASD diagnosis** - Families seeking deeper insight into emotional or academic challenges - Youth showing signs of co-occurring mental health or attention-related concerns - Individuals accessing (or planning to access) **Core Clinical Funding through the OAP** - Parents looking to update or refine support plans at home, in therapy, or at school ## What’s Included in the Assessment? Every assessment is tailored to your child’s unique profile and may include: - A clinical interview with parents/caregivers to understand history and current concerns - Direct observation and interaction with the child or youth - Standardized assessments of cognitive and academic functioning - Emotional and behavioral questionnaires completed by caregivers and (when applicable) educators - Input from school staff (with your consent) - A comprehensive written report with individualized insights and recommendations - A dedicated feedback session to walk through the findings and discuss next steps ## Get in Touch Taking the first step can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone.
