Play-Based Therapy for Children
Play-based therapy uses toys, art, imagination, and the natural language of play to help children safely explore experiences, build emotional awareness, and learn new ways of coping.
Play can help children express what words may not capture yet
For many children, emotions, worries, and experiences can be difficult to express through words alone. Play-based therapy creates a safe and developmentally appropriate space where children can communicate, process emotions, build coping skills, and strengthen emotional resilience through play, creativity, and connection.
Play-based therapy is guided by experienced clinicians who use play intentionally to support emotional growth, problem-solving, self-expression, and healthy relationships. Sessions are tailored to each child’s unique needs and may also include caregiver support and collaboration along the way.
Behaviour is communication
Children may communicate distress, confusion, overwhelm, or needs through behaviour before they can explain what is happening in words.
Big reactions
Play-based therapy can help explore the big feelings that may be happening underneath.
Shutting down
Therapy can create a safe space to understand overwhelm and build emotional awareness.
Acting out
Play can help children express needs, practise coping, and experience connection.
What the program provides
Child-focused interventions
Support that is shaped around how children communicate, process, and learn.
Take-home strategies
Practical ideas children and their parents can use outside the therapy room.
Collaborative approach
We believe the best outcomes happen when everyone works together. Throughout the therapy process, we collaborate closely with parents and caregivers, recognizing the important role they play in a child’s growth and well-being.
Better understanding
Support for parents in understanding what their child may need and why.
Is play-based therapy a good fit?
Play-based therapy can be an excellent choice for children who are navigating emotions, behavioural challenges, anxiety, life changes, social difficulties, or experiences that are hard to put into words.
This approach can be especially helpful for children experiencing:
- Anxiety or stress
- Emotional regulation challenges
- Behavioural concerns
- Life transitions or family changes
- Grief or loss
- Social difficulties
- Trauma or overwhelming experiences
How play helps
Play-based therapy creates a more engaging and fun environment, leading to increased participation, unlike traditional talk therapy that can be seen as “boring” for many children. By following a child’s lead in play while introducing therapeutic support when appropriate, children are able to explore feelings, practice new skills, and make sense of their experiences. This approach meets children where they are developmentally, helping them build resilience, confidence, emotional regulation, and stronger connections with the important people in their lives.
