Understanding More Than Autism

If your child or teen has already been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and is receiving support through the Ontario Autism Program (OAP), you may still be navigating big questions. Why is my child struggling at school? Are their emotions overwhelming them? Could something else like anxiety, ADHD, or a learning challenge—be affecting how they think, feel, or behave?

At Dr. Sala & Associates, we recognize that autism is just one part of the picture. That’s why we offer comprehensive psychological assessments designed to look beyond the diagnosis. These assessments explore learning styles, emotional well-being, cognitive functioning, and co-occurring concerns, helping you understand how to support your child across school, home, and community life.

What Is This Assessment?

This is not an autism diagnostic assessment. It is an in-depth, individualized evaluation focused on emotional, cognitive, academic, and behavioral functioning for children and teens with an existing ASD diagnosis. Our goal is to identify strengths, clarify challenges, and uncover any co-occurring conditions, such as ADHD, anxiety, learning disabilities, or emotional regulation difficulties, that may be contributing to day-to-day struggles.

These assessments can help you:

Better understand your child’s learning profile and how they process information

  • Explore challenges related to mood, anxiety, attention, and executive functioning
  • Clarify how autism may interact with other neurodevelopmental or mental health concerns
  • Receive specific recommendations for therapies, school accommodations, or skill-building supports
  • Strengthen service planning through the OAP or within school and community systems

Who This Is For

This type of assessment is ideal for:

  • Children or teens who already have a formal ASD diagnosis
  • Families seeking deeper insight into emotional or academic challenges
  • Youth showing signs of co-occurring mental health or attention-related concerns
  • Individuals accessing (or planning to access) Core Clinical Funding through the OAP
  • Parents looking to update or refine support plans at home, in therapy, or at school

What’s Included in the Assessment?

Every assessment is tailored to your child’s unique profile and may include:

  • A clinical interview with parents/caregivers to understand history and current concerns
  • Direct observation and interaction with the child or youth
  • Standardized assessments of cognitive and academic functioning
  • Emotional and behavioral questionnaires completed by caregivers and (when applicable) educators
  • Input from school staff (with your consent)
  • A comprehensive written report with individualized insights and recommendations
  • A dedicated feedback session to walk through the findings and discuss next steps
